Originally conceived in 1999 as an audio accompaniment for a small artwork installation, THUGGED OUT/Thug Doubt acts as an outline to the conundrum that is ‘free speech’, and to link the artwork to the sounds that acted as a catalyst. Being a staunch member of the Hip Hop generation, I’ve not only developed an intense love of the art form, but some serious concerns as well. I’ve seen and heard some things that compel me to question not only the effect of Hip Hop (as well as popular culture in general), but also the validity/motives of some of its artists.

Musically, THUGGED OUT/Thug Doubt is a collage of samples, conversational audio, and images as metaphors that is structured in EP format. Most, if not all, sounds were stitched together on a Fostex X-18 Multitracker, looped on a Gemini DS-824 sampler, or sequenced on a Boss DR-5 drum machine. Once completed, tracks were poorly digitized from four-track cassette tapes, and presented here.
